GPS Dog Walking Software: Prove Every Walk Happened
Good GPS dog walking software records where a walker checked in, where they checked out, and the route between, then shows it to the owner and the pet parent. Porchlight does that on the sitter's phone, works with no signal, and puts it on the visit report card.
No card. Free switch from Time To Pet, Precise Petcare, Pet Sitter Plus or LeashTime.
GPS dog walking software, in one answer
GPS dog walking software records where each walker checked in and out and the route they walked, then shows that proof to you and to the pet parent. It settles "did the walk happen" with a location and a time instead of an argument. The part most tools skip is what happens in a dead zone, so test that first.
Why owners want GPS on walks
Most walking companies start asking about GPS after one bad week. A pet parent says the dog was not walked. A walker says they were there. You have a text thread and a memory.
The questions owners ask are almost always the same:
- Did the walker actually walk, or just drop by?
- Can I show the client where the walk went?
- What happens when the phone has no signal?
- Will the walker's battery last a full day of walks?
- Will a bad GPS reading make me accuse a good walker of skipping a visit?
A dog walking app with GPS tracking should answer all five. Here is how to check.
What to look for in GPS tracking for dog walkers
Use this as a checklist in any trial, ours included.
- Check-in and check-out locations. Both, with times. One without the other proves little.
- The route. A line of where the walk went, not just two pins.
- Offline recording. The location is captured with no signal and sent later.
- Shown to the client. The pet parent sees the proof without calling you.
- Accuracy handling. The tool says so when a reading is weak instead of showing a confident wrong pin.
- Queue safety. A phone that dies mid-route should not erase the walk.
- Price that does not grow per walker. More walkers means more GPS visits, and your bill should stay put.
Which GPS features matter
| GPS feature | Why it matters | Porchlight today | Honest note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check-in location | Proves the walker started at the client's address | Recorded at check-in | A weak reading can be off by a block in dense cities |
| Check-out location | Proves the walker finished and where | Recorded at check-out | Same accuracy limits as check-in |
| Walk route | Shows the walk was a walk, not a drop-in | Route recorded and shown on the report card | Route recording is a breadcrumb setting, so confirm it is on for your walkers |
| Offline recording | Dead zones should not cost you proof | Works in airplane mode, syncs when signal returns | Not every action works in real time offline; test your worst route |
| Shown to owner and client | Ends disputes without a phone call | On the visit report card, in the client portal | This is proof after the visit, not a live map |
| Accuracy radius | Avoids false accusations | Report card shows a location-confidence badge when accuracy is poor | We show less rather than a pin we cannot stand behind |
One thing to be clear about. Porchlight shows GPS proof on the report card after the visit. It does not offer a live map for clients to watch a walk happen. If live tracking is a must-have for you, we are not the right fit today.
How it works in Porchlight
The walker opens the sitter app, taps check in at the client's door, and the location and time are recorded. They walk. The route is recorded. They tap check out, and that location and time are recorded too. Photos, notes, the checklist and access codes all live in the same visit.
The owner sees the result. So does the pet parent, on the visit report card in the client portal.
The sitter app is an installable web app, not an app store app. It installs from the browser to the home screen. There is a short guide at /help/add-to-home-screen.
Dead zones and dead batteries
This is where GPS tools earn their keep or lose it.
Parks, basements, elevators and rural stretches all lose signal. If the app needs a connection to log the check-in, the walk gets recorded late or not at all. That is the usual reason a "GPS" record has holes in it.
Porchlight records check-in, check-out and the route on the phone first. A full visit (check in and out, checklist, photos, notes, access codes) can be finished in airplane mode and syncs when signal returns. The pending queue survives a force-quit, a dead battery and a reboot. So if a walker's phone dies at 3 p.m., what was recorded is still there when it comes back on.
Batteries are still a real limit. A phone at 2 percent cannot record a route. Some practical habits help:
- Ask walkers to start the day above 80 percent and carry a small power bank.
- Turn on low power mode in the afternoon.
- Check in at the start of the walk, not at the end of the block.
- Do a test walk on your weakest route during the trial and look at what the report card shows.
For the longer argument on why this matters, read Offline is not a nice-to-have. The feature details are on the offline field app page.
Accuracy: why we show less on purpose
GPS in a city bounces off buildings. A walker standing on the right porch can show up half a block away for a minute. If your software draws that as a hard pin, a good walker looks like they skipped.
When accuracy is poor, Porchlight's report card shows a location-confidence badge instead of a precise pin. That is a deliberate choice. A record you can defend six months later is worth more than a prettier map.
What it costs
GPS proof is not a paid add-on. Solo is $35 a month ($350 a year) for the owner only. Team is $79 a month ($790 a year) with unlimited staff, the same price for 2 walkers or 40. The details are on the pricing page. Every plan starts with a 30-day free trial, no card.
Run this test in your trial
Do this in the first week and you will know more than any feature list tells you.
- Add one real client and walker.
- Have the walker turn on airplane mode and do a full walk.
- Reconnect and open the report card as the pet parent would.
- Check the check-in and check-out locations, the times and the route.
- Repeat on your worst-signal route.

The best dog walking software guide has a seven-test scorecard, and you can migrate pet sitting data with the Switch Kit, which imports CSV exports from Time To Pet, Precise Petcare, Pet Sitter Plus and LeashTime with a dry run and rollback. Timing depends on how much data you have.
Questions
What is GPS dog walking software?
It is software for walking companies that records where a walker checked in, where they checked out and the route between, then shows that to the owner and the pet parent. In Porchlight it appears on the visit report card.
Does Porchlight show a live map while the dog is being walked?
No. Porchlight records check-in and check-out locations and the walk route, and shows them on the report card after the visit. It does not have live map tracking for clients.
Does GPS still work when the walker has no signal?
Yes for recording. Check-in, check-out and the route are recorded on the phone, and the visit syncs when signal returns. You can finish a full visit in airplane mode. Not every action works in real time offline, so test your worst route in the trial.
What happens if the walker's phone dies mid-walk?
The pending queue survives a force-quit, a dead battery and a reboot. Anything recorded before the phone died is still there when it powers back on. The walk after it died cannot be recorded.
Is the sitter app in the App Store?
No. It is an installable web app that you add to the home screen from the browser. There is no app store download.
Can a bad GPS reading make a walker look like they skipped a visit?
It can happen with any GPS tool in dense areas. When accuracy is poor, Porchlight's report card shows a location-confidence badge instead of a precise pin, so you are not accusing anyone on a weak reading.
