Pet sitting software that syncs offline visits to the cloud

Offline-first pet sitting software lets a sitter finish a whole visit with no signal and uploads the record later. Here is how it works, what vendors say, and how to test it.

Offline-first pet sitting software saves each visit on the sitter's phone, including check-in, notes, photos and check-out, then uploads it to the cloud when the phone has signal again. The visit record stays complete even in a basement flat or a rural driveway. The key test is whether the whole visit works offline, or only part of it.

Quick version

  • A cloud-only app needs a connection at the moment the sitter taps a button. Offline-first apps do not.
  • "Offline mode" can mean very different things. Ask which steps work with no signal.
  • Check that the saved record keeps the time the sitter did each step, not the time it uploaded.
  • Test it yourself in airplane mode before you move your team over.
  • Porchlight's field app is built to finish a whole visit with no signal and sync later. Its offline field app page has the details.

Why no signal breaks visit records

Most pet sitting software is cloud-based. The data lives on the vendor's servers, and the sitter's phone talks to them. That works well until the sitter walks into a place with no reception.

Then one of three things happens. The app refuses to check in. The sitter writes notes on paper and types them in later. Or the sitter forgets the visit details by evening. Each one leaves a hole in the record, and holes are where client disputes start.

This matters for accountability too. If you cannot show when a sitter arrived, what the pet ate or whether the door was locked, you have little to go on when a client questions a visit.

What offline-first means in practice

Here is how this kind of design generally works. It is a description of the approach, not a claim about any one product.

  1. The app keeps a working copy of the day's visits on the phone.
  2. The sitter checks in, adds notes and photos, and checks out. Each action is saved on the phone with its time.
  3. When the phone finds a connection, the app uploads the saved actions to the cloud.
  4. The office sees the finished visit, and the client sees the report card.

The important part is step 2. If the time is stamped when the sitter taps, the record shows when the visit happened. If it is stamped when the upload finishes, the record can be hours off.

One side effect is worth knowing. A client report cannot reach the client until the phone syncs. That is normal, but tell clients that reports can arrive a little late when a sitter had no signal.

What Porchlight does

Porchlight's offline sitter app finishes a whole visit with no signal and syncs it later. Visits carry photos and GPS check-in and check-out, so the report card the client receives shows the same record the office sees. Porchlight is an installable web app, not an app store download.

Our own pricing page lists the step in the setup flow: sitters check in from the field app, even with no signal. The scheduling page adds that the field app sorts visits by window start and shows an arrival window such as "Arrive 10am to 1pm". Windows mean sitters are not promising a clock time they cannot always hit.

Porchlight is our product, so weigh this section accordingly. Test it in the trial rather than taking our word for it.

What other vendors say about offline and sync

We read each company's own pages, checked November 5, 2026. Every one of these companies sells pet business software, so these are marketing claims. We did not test any of them.

VendorWhat its own page saysWhat the page does not tell us
Precise PetcareCloud-based software. The mobile app lets sitters use GPS tracking, send Pet Care Journals and keep working with offline mode when service is unreliable.Which steps work offline, and how sync is handled.
DaySmart PetMobile app with real-time synchronization between the mobile device and desktop.Whether visits can be finished with no signal. We did not find offline use described there.
AnollaCloud-based access from any device. Bookings, client details and pet profiles sync automatically.Whether a visit can be completed offline. We did not find it described there.
Pet Sitter PlusFully cloud-based, with GPS check-ins and check-in and check-out of visits for staff.Whether those steps work with no signal. We did not find it described there.

Our view: "real-time sync" and "syncs automatically" describe how data moves when a phone is connected. They do not say what happens in a dead zone. If a page does not mention offline use, ask the vendor directly.

How to test offline sync before you commit

Use the free trial. Run this with one sitter and one test client, not live customers.

  1. Schedule a test visit for tomorrow.
  2. On the sitter's phone, open the app while connected so the day's visits load.
  3. Switch on airplane mode.
  4. Check in, add a note, take a photo, mark a task done, and check out.
  5. Close the app fully and reopen it. Is the visit still there?
  6. Wait ten minutes, then switch airplane mode off.
  7. Open the office view. Check that the visit appears, the photo came through, and the times match when you tapped, not when you reconnected.
  8. Check what the test client received and when.

If any step fails, ask the vendor whether that is expected. A product that only lets you check in offline, and holds everything else until signal returns, is not an offline-first visit.

Questions to ask any vendor

  • Which visit steps work with no signal: check-in, notes, photos, tasks, check-out?
  • Are timestamps taken from the phone at the moment of the tap?
  • What happens if the sitter closes the app or the phone restarts before syncing?
  • What happens if the office edits a visit while the sitter is offline?
  • Can the sitter see their schedule for the day with no signal?

The last two are the ones vendors rarely volunteer. Our view: a clear, specific answer is a good sign, and a vague one is a reason to test harder.

Keeping sitters accountable

Offline sync is only part of accountability. You also want a record you can look back at. Precise Petcare's page says availability, time off, key management, time and mileage tracking, and sitter reliability reports help keep field operations accountable. Precise Petcare sells this software, so treat that as its pitch.

Whatever tool you use, the basics are the same. Every visit should have a check-in time, a check-out time, notes and photos. The office should see all of it in one place.

If you pay sitters per visit, Porchlight calculates sitter pay from completed visits and exports it as a CSV. It does not pay sitters or file taxes. Payroll is handled in your own payroll provider. The invoicing and sitter pay page explains the export.

Cost

Porchlight's Solo plan is $35 a month, and Team is $79 a month with unlimited staff. Every plan starts with a 30-day free trial. You can see the details on the pricing page. Offline use is part of the field app, so there is no separate add-on to buy.

Try it where signal is worst

The best test is the dead zone you already know: the apartment basement, the farm road, the elevator. Run the airplane mode test above there, and see if the visit record holds up. Try Porchlight free for 30 days and put the field app through it.

Questions

Does offline mode mean the app works with no internet at all?

Not always. Some apps keep working offline for only part of a visit. Ask which steps work with no signal, then test them in airplane mode during a free trial.

When do clients get the visit report if the sitter had no signal?

After the phone syncs. The report waits on the sitter's phone until a connection returns. Tell clients that reports can arrive a little late in weak coverage areas.

Can a sitter still check in with GPS offline?

It depends on the product, so test it. Porchlight's field app is built to finish a whole visit with no signal, including check-in and check-out, and sync later.

Is cloud-based software the same as offline-first software?

No. Cloud-based means the data is stored on the vendor's servers. Offline-first means the phone can record the visit without a connection and upload later.

Does Porchlight handle sitter payroll after the visits sync?

No. Porchlight calculates sitter pay from completed visits and exports it as a CSV. You handle payroll in your own payroll provider.
